YouTube Thumbnail Downloader & Grabber

Paste a video, Short, live stream, or youtu.be link. Instantly preview and download all available thumbnail sizes from YouTube — free, private, no signup.

How this thumbnail downloader works

When you paste a link, the page first reads the 11-character video ID out of it — entirely in your browser. Then it builds the standard image addresses YouTube uses (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/<video-id>/<size>.jpg) and asks YouTube's public image CDN for each size, one at a time. Your browser loads the image directly from YouTube; nothing passes through a Marqly server. If a size was never generated, the CDN returns a small gray placeholder instead of a real image, and the page detects that and hides the size — so you only ever see thumbnails that actually exist. Pressing Download JPG fetches the image in your browser and saves it to your machine; if your browser blocks the direct download, the page opens the image in a new tab so you can save it yourself.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Copy the video's link from YouTube — a watch page, a Short, a live stream, an embed URL, a youtu.be link, or just the bare 11-character video ID.
  2. Paste it into the field above and press Get thumbnails.
  3. The page checks each published size and shows one card for every thumbnail that exists.
  4. Click Download JPG to save a copy, or Open image to view the full-resolution file first.

YouTube thumbnail sizes explained

For every video, YouTube's CDN serves several stills at fixed addresses. They differ in resolution and in aspect ratio — three of them use an old 4:3 frame, which is why widescreen videos show black bars in those versions.

SizeFile nameResolutionWhen it exists
Maximum resolutionmaxresdefault.jpg1280 × 720 (16:9)Only when YouTube generated a full-HD still. Older uploads and low-resolution sources often don't have it.
Standard definitionsddefault.jpg640 × 480 (4:3)Available for most videos; widescreen footage is letterboxed with black bars.
High qualityhqdefault.jpg480 × 360 (4:3)Available for nearly every video. This is the size many older embeds and third-party sites display.
Medium qualitymqdefault.jpg320 × 180 (16:9)Available for nearly every video; keeps the native widescreen ratio with no bars.
Smalldefault.jpg120 × 90 (4:3)The smallest published version; broadly available.

YouTube also publishes alternate frame grabs (hq1.jpg through hq3.jpg) for some videos. This tool checks only the five canonical sizes above — it never shows you a dead link.

Shorts, live streams, and other link shapes

Shorts and live streams are videos with the same 11-character IDs, and YouTube publishes their thumbnails at the same i.ytimg.com addresses as ordinary uploads — so ayoutube.com/shorts/... or youtube.com/live/... link behaves exactly like a watch link here. Sharing links (youtu.be), embed links, and tracking parameters appended to any of them are all handled: the tool only needs the ID, and ignores everything else in the URL.

What you get — and what you don't

The files you download are the rendered JPGs YouTube's CDN publishes, not the original image the creator uploaded. YouTube re-encodes thumbnails, so a PNG source arrives here as a JPG, andmaxresdefault caps at 1280 × 720 even for 4K videos. For thumbnails and Shorts covers there is no higher-quality public copy than the one this page shows you. The tool also never recompresses, upscales, or watermarks anything on our side — you receive the CDN's bytes unchanged.

Privacy: what gets sent, and where

The video ID is extracted locally from the text you paste. It is never uploaded to, or logged by, Marqly. The only network requests the tool makes are image fetches fromi.ytimg.com, issued by your own browser — the same kind of request any web page makes when it displays an image, so YouTube sees a normal image request from your IP address. The downloaded file goes straight to your computer's downloads folder. There is no account, no watermark, and no server-side copy of anything.

Tips and edge cases

  • A bare 11-character video ID works — you don't need the full URL.
  • Private and deleted videos usually return no usable thumbnails. For an unlisted video the cover is still retrievable through its direct image URL, so treat thumbnails as effectively public.
  • Saved files are named youtube-<video-id>-<size>.jpg, so a batch of downloads stays sorted by source.
  • Prefer mqdefault or maxresdefault when you want the clean 16:9 frame, and hqdefault when you need the widest compatibility with older sites.

Grabbing the cover image is usually step one of working with the video itself. TheYouTube transcript viewer copies the spoken text, thetimestamp link generator creates an exact share point, and the chapter generator turns a transcript into ready-to-paste chapters. If your thumbnails are bookmarks for videos you intend to watch later, Marqly'sread-it-later workflow saves the link with its transcript and summary attached.

Frequently asked questions

Does this download the original uploaded thumbnail?

It requests the thumbnail sizes YouTube publishes for the video. When maxresdefault is available, that is normally the highest-resolution public thumbnail. Older or low-resolution videos may only provide smaller versions.

Does it work with YouTube Shorts and live links?

Yes. Standard watch URLs, youtu.be links, Shorts URLs, live URLs, embed URLs, and bare 11-character video IDs are supported.

Is the video or thumbnail uploaded to Marqly?

No. The page extracts the public video ID locally, and your browser loads the thumbnail directly from YouTube’s image CDN.

Can I reuse someone else’s thumbnail?

A public image is not automatically free to reuse. Download thumbnails you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise legally allowed to use.

Why is there no 1280 × 720 size for some videos?

YouTube only publishes the largest version for videos it generated one for. Older uploads and low-resolution sources often have no maxresdefault file, which is why this tool probes every size and shows only the ones that actually exist.

Why do some thumbnail sizes have black bars?

The 120 × 90, 480 × 360, and 640 × 480 versions use a 4:3 frame, so widescreen videos get black bars above and below. The 320 × 180 and 1280 × 720 versions keep the native 16:9 ratio without bars.
